Who is Yue Minjun?

Yue Minjun is a Chinese artist born in 1962 who now lives and works in Beijing. He is one of the most popular living Chinese artists of the decade. 

He is particularly famous for his paintings of men laughing out loud (often himself) in grotesque settings. 

He is one of the founding artists of the artistic movement born in China in the 1990s called "Cynical Realism".  Artists from this movement turned away from the avant-garde and had fun diverting the codes of Chinese propaganda to express the lived experience in society. 

The monumental paintings of Yue Minjun with characters literally dead of laughter hides a sharp criticism of the standardization and repression in the Chinese society. Laught, grotesque, sarcastic and ambiguous is the artistic leitmotiv of Yue Minjun. 

Since 2013, his paintings have sold for several million dollars at auction and the artist has been exhibited all over the world, such as at the Foundation Cartier in Paris, the Shanghai Biennale and the Queens Museum in New York.
