Yue Minjun is a Chinese artist born in 1962 who now lives and works in Beijing. He is one of the most popular living Chinese artists of the decade.  He is particularly  famous for his paintings of men laughing out loud  (often himself) in grotesque settings.  He is one of the founding artists of the artistic movement born in China in the 1990s called " Cynical Realism ".  Artists from this movement turned away from the avant-garde and had fun  diverting the codes of Chinese propaganda to express the lived experience in society.  The monumental paintings of Yue Minjun with characters literally dead of laughter hides  a sharp criticism of the standardization and repression  in the Chinese society. My work consists of three series: 'God series,' 'harmony,' and 'Mandala.' Painting is like performing ancestral rites for me. Through repeated actions of drawing, it relieves obsessions and becomes a healing process. Completed works become perfect beings, divine beings. There are so many things that we can't have. But I can't stand without the hope of having someday. We should listen regularly to another voice longing for the another beautiful life. I hope you get energy through my works and become perfect like a god. I applied my artwork "Blue bird"in Hopper Prize.  They follow mine in instagram. Please check the heart in @hopperprize.  The artwork features fighting politicians, their faces comically contorted.  Are their exaggerated expressions real? Or are they merely playing, posing for the cameras, for us? Painting within a discourse of social analysis, a process of clipping media images, and classifying her subjects, Suhyun Kim challenges our sense of emotional honesty. Her images debate accountability and guilt, forcing us to question our complicity. Like photographs as witness to personal stories, her paintings depict individuals as  universal archetypes, simultaneously complex and simple, like each of us .

Unification Exhibition Peace Together, an exhibition on Korean unification, will take place at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) from Dec. 5th, 2017 to Mar. 4th, 2018. Funded by the Ministry of Unification and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the exhibition will cover the tragedy of a divided nation and the division that has lasted more than 60 years.  Peace Together will feature art, photos, and video and multimedia works. Visitors will be able to see the tragedies of war and division, and the hope of unification that the future brings.
